Sand City Museum

  • Sand City Museum considered to be one of the most important and famous tourist attractions in Hurghada, it's the first and only Museum in the middle East and Africa created from sand.
  • It is located in the south of Hurghada, and was established in December 2012.

The importance of sand city in Hurghada.

  • The idea of this museum is actually implemented in Japan and America, but it considered to be the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East.
  • In addition to that it’s the first of it’s kind to use two types of sand in the manufacture of statues.

The factors that helped build Sand City Museum in Hurghada 

  • The climate and weather factors are very suitable for its establishment in Egypt and especially in Hurghada.
  • Most of Egypt's land is desert, so the sand used in construction can be extracted from it very easily.
  • They used yellow and white Egyptian sand in establishment of the statues in the museum, which are characterized by low salinity.
  • Sand City Museum was built using more than 12 thousand tons of golden sand mixed with white sand, which is widely available in that region.

How was this global statues were made?

  • The construction process takes place through wooden boxes filled with the unique Egyptian desert sand.
  • Then, they were mixed with water to remove the salinity from it. 
  • After that, it were pressed with certain machines to let the air get out from them, this boxes were loosened after 25 day.
  • Then, the statues were sculpted, and adhesive material is placed to fix these statues.
  • It took about 7 months to carve these statues by 42 sculptors from different countries, including «Russia, America, Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain ... etc.»
  • Although these art pieces are characterized by a lot of meticulous accuracy in highlighting the smallest details, in the end they remain sandy clusters exposed to damage by the fluctuations of the weather, wind, and rain.
  • Therefore, the state is keen to restoring it by a group of sculptors periodically to preserve it.

  • The sculptures embody most of the world's civilizations, like mythical personalities, famous leaders, and ancient gods.

  • The ticket prices for foreigners $20 for those over 12 years old, while it is $10 for children under 12 years old, and entrance is free for children under three years old.
  • The ticket prices for Egyptians is 80 Egyptian  pounds, while children from 5 to 12 years old 40 Egyptian pounds, children under 5 years are free.
