Tomb of petosoris

  • Tomb of Petosoris was one of the most important ancients Egyptian cemeteries.
  • It was the tomb of a "priest" cleric, not for a king or a provincial governor.
  •  He was the high priest of the god Thoth.
  • It was discovered by French archaeologist Gustave Leffer in February 1919.

  • It was a family tomb for the priest "Badi Osir," whose name means "the gift of Osir" in the ancient Egyptian language, and it is "Petosoris" in the Greek language

  • Eight priests were buried in it, and inside it was found the coffin of Petosoris, which is considered one of the most beautiful coffins in terms of design, inscriptions, and drawings
  • It  is currently in the Egyptian Museum.

  • The tomb takes the form of an Egyptian temple, and is not just a traditional tomb.

  • It is exactly similar to the facade of the Temple of Dendera, where the facade is adorned with four huge columns, two of them are imitating palm trees, and the other two imitating composite columns of lotus, and papyrus.

  • The importance of this tomb is that it represents the artistic transition between ancient Egyptian art, and the early Ptolemaic era, as scene mix between the ancient Egyptian, and Greek cultures.

  • Scenes of agricultural work painted in the traditional Egyptian way, but the people who appear in these scenes wear Greek clothes.


  • What is striking in that scene is the observation of the woman going out to help the man in the agricultural works.
