Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum

Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum is one of the few museums in the world that displays pieces of art that were discovered in the same place as they were displayed, in addition to that its the first museum in the world to be built inside a library.

As The museum contains 1.133 exhibits, most notably the following two groups:

  1. Artifacts discovered during excavations at the library site (1993-1995).
  2. Antiquities raised from the bottom of the Mediterranean near the eastern port and in the area of ​​Abu Qir Bay.

The museum witnessed a new method of displaying monuments, where two-dimensional paintings were shown for the blind, a method that is applied for the first time, and allows the blind to enjoy the antiquities through the sense of touch, especially that the museum receives many blind visitors.

History of the Museum 

The museum was officially opened on October 16, 2002.

  • It is worth noting that the museum was not exposed to any acts of sabotage or theft during the periods of the revolution, due to the good insurance of the museum within the full insurance system of the Library of Alexandria, in addition to the fact that it was not exposed to any acts of sabotage by the terrorist Brotherhood after the fall of the Brotherhood’s rule in Egypt after the June 30 revolution.

Greco-Roman Antiquities

The Greco-Roman section is the largest section in this museum.

  • This era began with the entry of Alexander the Great into Egypt since 332 BC, then the rule of the Ptolemies, which ended with the rule of Queen Cleopatra VII.

Statues donate to Serapeum Temple 

  • Both the Ptolemaic kings and the Roman emperors after them were keen to donate many statues to decorate the Serapeum Temple because of its sanctity and importance, the Antiquities Museum of Alexandria Library included many of these distinctive statues.

The second plate is a medal  Round, with a funny theme found for the first time in the history of the discovery of the mosaic floors in Alexandria, where it depicts a dog sitting next to an inverted Greek pot, which seems to represent a theatrical scene of a fairy tale or a novel from one of the literary works of the ancient literary heritage of Alexandria, for which it was famous during  The first three centuries preceding AD, but the shape of the piece does not give us a clear idea of ​​the place where it was decorated.

  • a part on which the Bible was placed, and around it 4 holes where candles were placed for lighting.

  • The last part to keep the Bible inside after the prayers were completed.
